Ten kilobytes is about 10,000 bytes. An uncompressed 140×60 pixel colour image already needs around 25KB, so even a small signature must be compressed by more than half. A full phone photo at 4000×3000 pixels would have to lose over 99.9% of its data, which no compressor can do without turning it into a blur of blocks.
The practical rule: at 10KB, pixel dimensions matter more than the quality setting. Signatures of roughly 140×60 to 300×100 pixels and passport-style photos of about 200×230 pixels fit comfortably. Anything much larger should be resized before you compress. The tool will still try, automatically shrinking dimensions if quality alone can't reach the target, but you get a cleaner result when you choose the size yourself.
The form says “between 4KB and 10KB”. What if my file gets too small?
Some portals set a minimum as well as a maximum to reject blank or corrupted uploads. This tool aims just under your target, typically landing within 10% of it, so a 10KB target usually produces a file around 9KB, comfortably above most minimums. If a file is already below your target, it is returned unchanged.
Why is my 10KB photo full of blocky squares?
Those are JPEG compression artifacts, which appear when an image has too many pixels for the byte budget. Resize the photo to a smaller width (200 to 250 pixels for a passport-style photo) and compress again. A small sharp image beats a large blocky one.
Is 10KB useful outside government forms?
Yes. Logos in email signatures, forum avatars, inline images in HTML emails, and thumbnails for low-bandwidth pages all benefit from tiny files. Keeping an email signature logo under 10KB means it adds almost nothing to every message you send.
Can I go even lower than 10KB?
The target box accepts values down to 5KB. Below that, only very small or mostly blank images can still be recognised, so expect to resize aggressively.
Is your limit a bit more generous? The Compress to 20KB tool covers the most common signature cap, and Compress to 30KB suits small photos. For the matching photo slot on the same form, use Compress to 50KB. Signature saved as a PNG from a scanning app? It is converted to JPEG automatically, or you can do it yourself with PNG to JPG.
